Explanation of Residential Door Handing

The handing of a door is always determined by standing on the outside of a building or room, facing the exterior of a door.

  • If the hinge is on the left side of the door, the door is left handed (LH).
  • If the hinge is on the right side of the door, the door is right handed (RH).

To order a handed product, specify LH or RH. Not all products are handed; only specify handing when required.

Explanation of Commercial Door Handing

At SGS we find that different people in different areas of the country sometimes subscribe to a different door handing system than the one shown here. The handing chart shown above illustrates how we view commercial door handing. Unless you specify otherwise we will use our standard system.

The handing of a door is always determined by standing on the outside of a building or room, facing the exterior of a door.

  • If the hinge is on the left side of the door, the door is left handed (LH). If a left handed door swings opens toward your body, it is a Left Hand Reverse door.
  • If the hinge is on the right side of the door, the door is right handed (RH). If a right handed door swings opens toward your body, it is a Right Hand Reverse door.

To order a handed product, specify LH. LHR, RH, or RHR. Not all products are handed; only specify handing when required.
