In the 1960s, Floyd Hughes sold door hinges and hardware in the Northwest. He was good at his job, eventually starting his own business representing door hinge and other hardware lines. So it was no surprise when Floyd had one, two, three, four boys – and finally a baby girl – who ended up spending time around hinges.
These kids counted hinges, sorted hinges, lifted hinges, NRP’d hinges (For the hinge novice, that means adding a non-removable pin to a hinge.), boxed hinges. Over time, the kids moved on to do other things. All of them, except Phil. Turns out Phil had a knack for hinges, and customers liked him.
Right out of college, he ran a Northwest warehouse for a national hinge manufacturer. And when that closed down in 1996, former customers encouraged him to become a distributor on his own. Phil thought about it, then pulled every dollar out of his 401K to start SGS: Superior Goods and Service.
Initially, SGS was a one-man operation. Phil took orders in the afternoon, picked them at night, then drove around delivering them in the morning. Sleep was in short supply, but he pushed on because he’s an unusually determined kind of guy.
Today, SGS has its own line of door hinges and accessories sold to door shops throughout the U.S. We operate with one of Phil’s mottos in mind:
“Whatever it takes to get ‘er done.”
It's a simple approach that simply works beautifully – for us and for our customers.
